Supports mechanistic studies in neuroscience, from structure to function in natural context, that span multiple levels of analysis, from molecular and cellular to complex behavioral aspects of organisms.

Supports research in mathematical biology that addresses significant biological questions by applying nontrivial mathematics or developing new theories — particularly from foundational mathematics, including artificial intelligence or machine learning.

Supports genome-scale plant research and the development of tools and resources that advance functional plant genomics — addressing challenges of biological, societal and economic importance.

Supports research and training on the structure and function of organisms. Core areas supported include development, behavior, neuroscience, physiology, biomechanics and morphology, microbiology, virology and immunology, and plant and animal genomics.

Supports research and research coordination networks focusing on interactions between plants and their symbionts, pathogens and pests and the molecular, genomic, metabolic, cellular, network and organismal processes that mediate these interactions.
