Julia Gerson joins NSF as a 2021–2022 AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow in the Division for Research on Learning in Formal and Informal Settings within the Directorate for STEM Education. Before the fellowship, Julia was a neuroscientist studying protein misfolding and aggregation in neurodegenerative disease. She completed her undergraduate studies in biology and psychology at Arizona State University and her Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Texas Medical Branch. Outside of her work as a bench scientist, Julia has been an advocate for equity in STEM education. As a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan she founded a science certificate course for incarcerated individuals and led a number of interactive science events for youth in Michigan and Texas.
