ENG Distinguished Lecture: Harvesting Energy From The Environment

This talk will begin with a review of recent achievements in Ultra-Low Power (ULP) electronics including logic, memory, analog front end (AFE), analog to digital conversion (ADC), radio and power management.  It will also describe devices that harvest energy from mechanical vibration, thermal gradients, and ambient electromagnetic energy (solar & radio frequency).

Dr. Buss will then discuss recent advancements in small, complex self-powered systems.  Such systems have applications in wireless sensor networks for environmental monitoring in smart buildings, fatigue monitoring in pipelines and bridges, security monitoring, and engine monitoring.  They also present great potential for applications in medical and health monitoring.

The talk concludes with the system integration challenges that need to be overcome in order to realize the vision of self-powered systems.
